New Cocktail: Stella Maris

Stella Maris, latin for “Star of the sea,” is a religious reference to Mary, the mother of Jesus. I’ll stop you right here for a second. Don’t worry, I haven’t gone over to that side. I just like the name. I’m not religious by any means, nor am I an atheist. I’m more of a believer in the fact that I know absolutely nothing and that most religions exist to provide answers to BIG questions in life (among other things). That way, people can go about their merry way without having to worry about what happens to them when they die, etc. because they’re told you go to heaven if you die…Well…As long as you’re a good person. The bad people go to the dark pits of hell and burn for eternity…If anything, it’s a good way to keep people in line…

Stella Maris was used as a nautical term for sailors, fisherman, Navy types, etc. anyone spending time near the water and looking for guidance and protection while out in the stormy seas which is also a metaphor for life in general. Sometimes we need to look someone else to look out for us either metaphysically or literally.

Cormac McCarthy’s last book was Stella Maris. A conversation about the trials and tribulations of a math genius and much more. It was published and he died soon after.

My newborn baby daughter’s name is Stella. The name was chosen by Jo’s dad before he died.

How the hell did I get here? No idea.

I forgot to tell Angel that when he’s taking the window pictures that he has to try and snap a homeless in there in order to make it more authentic.

This cocktail is very close to Nobody’s Fool. Lets review.

Nobody’s Fool

1.5 oz. Guava Strawberry Scrap Infused White Rum

1 oz. Strawberry Punch

.5 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

.5 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice

.5 oz. Macadamia Koji Orgeat (Mac Daddy)

.5 oz. Strawperol

.25 oz. Strawberry Lactic Acid Syrup

One Dash Shio Koji

Shake, strain over a BFR, dash dehydrated strawperol powder over the top.

Hmm. Less Mac Daddy, less citrus, a little more dark rum, no lemon, but basically the same thing. This one includes the strawberry punch which is the most read blog post here. It’s pretty good and sometimes I can’t believe I shared the recipe.

Anyway, I’ve got a thing for strawberries. I wrote about it awhile back in May of 2023. Something called My Strawberry Romance. Each pseudo spring we pump out a couple of great strawberry ones. Strawberries are available all year but the good ones come now. Same with raspberries. I want my cocktail book to have a big old strawberry on it.

Can a cocktail be a guiding light? Probably not, unless it’s something you’re really into. But hey, maybe it is for me. I don’t know.
